From the Premier's Desk

Tasmania in summer is a place full of fun.  The range of yacht races, festivals, carnivals and events that sweep across the State in the Christmas-New Year period give most of us the chance to spend some time with our families and friends – enjoying the good things in life.

Our thoughts of course go out to our emergency service personnel and essential staff around the State, who continue to work hard and watch carefully to keep the rest of us safe during this period.

Our thoughts are also with the disadvantaged in our community, and the many groups, workers and charities that are providing care and support to try and bring a touch of the happiness of Christmas to all.

More than ever, I am enthusiastic as I look forward into 2009 about the things we can achieve together.  Through community forums, and the attendance of government members at events around the State, we can keep listening to what’s on your mind, and working with you to build a more connected Tasmanian community.

My new year’s resolution is simple – to be the best Premier that I can be for this State.  In a time of global financial uncertainty, I am focussed on investing in the things that will keep Tasmania’s economy strong, and Tasmanian workers in jobs.  By investing in infrastructure projects, by increasing people’s skills and through strong financial management, I know that we can set Tasmania up for another decade of prosperity.

I wish you and your family a very safe and merry Christmas, and a new year full of energy and fresh ideas about your life, and the contribution you can make to this State that we are all lucky enough to call home.
